One summer in college, Eric and Josh built Classroom Hero for Eric’s mom, a teacher who wanted a better way to track classroom points. They both grew up with classroom reward systems, and they knew those systems could be a lot more fun. As avid video game lovers, they implemented their favorite aspects from popular video games like World of Warcraft and others to make learning a more fun and engaging experience for students.

Josh graduated from UC Santa Cruz with a computer science degree, then worked at SurveyMonkey. He is still a software engineer in tech, and a founder of Classroom Hero on the side. He loves video games, and he is passionate about education and serving underserved communities. He and Eric fell in love with software engineering by building Classroom Hero together in college, and they are still best friends building it today. He reads every email and support request teachers make and responds promptly.

Eric Horvat

Eric went to Southern Oregon University and dropped out to work full time as a software engineer at O’Reilly Media. He is a principal software engineer there now. Classroom Hero was his idea, a way to help his mom with her classes. He and Josh have been building it together ever since. He also reads every email and support request from teachers.

Susan Horvat

Project based learning coach & teacher for over 30 years

Susan is Eric’s mom. She is a project based learning coach and teacher at Shanél Valley Academy, and has been teaching for over 30 years. She teaches Positive Discipline to parents too. She studied American history at UC Davis, earned her credential at Sonoma State, and taught middle school humanities and language arts before Shanél.
